What Othala means

Othala is the rune of ancestral property, inherited land, and the sacred bond between a people and their homeland. In Norse society, the odal (allodial) land was the inalienable family estate passed down through generations, representing not just physical territory but the accumulated spiritual heritage of the ancestors. In Heathen practice, Othala speaks to one's roots, the gifts passed down from forebears, and the responsibilities that come with inheritance. It calls the practitioner to honor the ancestors, preserve worthy traditions, and understand that true belonging comes from maintaining right relationship with one's heritage and kin.

Othala in the historical rune poems

Three medieval poems preserve the meanings of the runes — the oldest testimony we have.

An estate is very dear to every man, if he can enjoy there in his house whatever is right and proper in constant prosperity.
