What Kenaz means

Kenaz is the rune of the torch, the controlled fire of human knowledge, craft, and creativity. While the Norwegian and Icelandic poems associate it with 'kaun' (ulcer/sore), the Anglo-Saxon poem preserves the older meaning of 'cen' (torch). In Heathen practice, Kenaz represents the fire of the forge, the creative spark, and the illumination of understanding. It is the rune of the skilled craftsperson and the transformative power of controlled fire. Kenaz brings light to darkness and clarity to confusion.

Kenaz in the historical rune poems

Three medieval poems preserve the meanings of the runes — the oldest testimony we have.

The torch is known to every living man by its pale, bright flame; it always burns where princes sit within.
Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem
Ulcer is fatal to children; death makes a corpse pale.
Norwegian Rune Poem
Ulcer is disease fatal to children, and painful spot, and abode of mortification.
Icelandic Rune Poem
