What Hagalaz means

Hagalaz is the rune of hail, the destructive forces of nature that are beyond human control. As the first rune of the second aett, it marks the beginning of a more challenging passage through the rune row. Hagalaz represents the hailstorm that flattens the crops, the unavoidable crisis that shatters old patterns and forces transformation. In Heathen practice, this rune teaches that disruption is a necessary part of the cosmic order. What is destroyed by hail melts into water that nourishes new growth. Hagalaz cannot be reversed, for its power operates in all directions.

Hagalaz in the historical rune poems

Three medieval poems preserve the meanings of the runes — the oldest testimony we have.

Hail is the whitest of grain; it is whirled from the vault of heaven and is tossed about by gusts of wind, and then it melts into water.
Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem
Hail is the coldest of grain; Christ created the world of old.
Norwegian Rune Poem
Hail is cold grain, and shower of sleet, and sickness of serpents.
