Full Seasonal Blot -- Solstice and Equinox Rite

Level: intermediate

The seasonal blot is the most elaborate form of Norse ritual -- a full offering ceremony for the solstices, equinoxes, and other major holy days. Snorri Sturluson in Ynglinga saga ch. 8 describes three great blots: at the start of winter (for a good year), at midwinter (for good crops), and at the start of summer (for victory). The Saga of Hakon the Good ch. 14-16 provides the most detailed description of a seasonal blot: the blood of sacrificial animals was sprinkled on the altar and walls, the meat was boiled, fires were lit down the center of the hall, and toasts were drunk over the kettles. This modern adaptation preserves the essential structure while being accessible to solitary practitioners.

What you need

  • A drinking horn or ceremonial cup
  • Mead, ale, cider, or non-alcoholic substitute
  • A libation bowl (hlautbolli) and a bundle of twigs or a small brush (hlautteinn) for sprinkling
  • A candle or fire source (a bonfire outdoors if possible)
  • Offerings: bread, grain, honey, seasonal produce
  • An altar or designated sacred surface
  • Optional: a Thor's hammer for hallowing

The rite, step by step

  1. 1

    Hallow the Space (Helga Ve)

Mark the sacred space. If outdoors, walk the perimeter of your ritual area clockwise (sunwise). If indoors, stand at your altar. Trace the sign of the hammer in four directions (north, east, south, west). Say at each direction: 'Thor, Hallower, ward this place with Mjolnir's might. May no ill enter here. This space is helgat -- it is hallowed.' Light the fire or candle.

  2. 2

    Invoke the Gods (Aradh Godhin)

Face north (or face the fire). Raise your arms and call upon the gods appropriate to the season: Winter Solstice/Yule: Odin, Frigg, Freyr, Sunna Spring Equinox: Freyr, Freyja, Odin (Sigrblot - victory sacrifice) Summer Solstice: Freyr, Freyja, Sunna, Baldr Autumn Equinox: Odin, the Disir, Freyr Say: 'I call upon [deity names] at this turning of the year. I stand at the threshold of [season]. I ask for your presence, your blessing, and your witness. Hail!'

  3. 3

    The Reading (Kvaedhskapr)

Read aloud a passage from the Eddas or sagas appropriate to the season. Suggestions: Yule: Voluspa stanzas 59-66 (Ragnarok and rebirth) Spring: Havamal stanzas 1-5 (the traveler's wisdom) Midsummer: Skirnismal (Freyr's courtship of Gerd) Autumn: Havamal stanzas 76-78 (cattle die, kinsmen die, but fame never dies) Read slowly and with intention. These are not entertainment -- they are sacred words.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Offering (Blot)

Fill the hlautbolli (offering bowl) with mead or ale. Place bread and seasonal offerings on the altar. Hold the hlautteinn (twig-bundle or brush) ready. Say: 'I prepare this offering as my forebears prepared theirs -- with clean hands, a willing heart, and the understanding that every gift demands a gift in return.'

  5. 5

    The Blessing (Bletsian)

Dip the hlautteinn into the drink and sprinkle (sprenge) the altar, the fire, and yourself. This act consecrates the offering and the space -- in the historical blot, blood was sprinkled on the walls and the participants. As you sprinkle, say: 'I bless this altar, this fire, and myself with this offering. May the gods receive it. May the gift-cycle turn. May the bond between mortal and divine be strengthened at this turning.'

  6. 6

    The Toasts (Sumbel portion)

Raise the horn. Make three toasts: 1. To the gods of the season: 'Hail [deity]! At this [solstice/equinox], I honor your [specific quality]. [Personal dedication].' 2. To the ancestors: 'I drink to my ancestors who stood at this same turning, year after year, and kept the old ways. Their blood is my blood. Hail!' 3. To the coming season: 'I face the [winter/spring/summer/autumn] with [quality you seek]. May the gods grant [specific seasonal blessing]. Heil og sael!' Drink after each toast. Pour a portion for the gods.

  7. 7

    The Main Offering

Take the food offerings and either place them on the fire (if outdoors), bury them in the earth, or set them at the base of a tree. Say: 'I give these gifts to the gods, to the landvaettir, and to the ancestors. May the earth receive them. May they sustain the sacred bond. The gift is given.'

  8. 8

    Close the Blot

Pour the remaining drink from the hlautbolli onto the earth. Say: 'The blot is done. The offerings are given. The gods have been hailed, the ancestors remembered, and the season honored. I close this rite as my forebears closed theirs -- with gratitude, with purpose, and with the knowledge that every turning carries the seeds of the next. Heil Aesir! Heil Vanir! Heil the ancestors! Heil the land!' Extinguish the fire.
